Engaged!

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

Some of you may have seen the congratulatory post on Paul's blog, but here's the official word. Over the weekend (on my birthday, no less), my boyfriend proposed to me and I said yes! We're very happy and excited. Of course, we both keep looking at each other and going, "Oh my god! We're engaged!" It'll probably take us a couple of weeks to get used to it. :-)

I also have some other great news - I'm transitioning to a new role, effective September 1. My new title is Lotus Brand Architect within the Technical Sales organization. Basically, I'll be responsible for architecting multi-product solutions across the entire Lotus product portfolio. While that's exciting, the best part about it is that it's regional - meaning that the constant travel I've been doing for the last three years will slow down significantly. Hello, social life! Now I'll have time to do things like... plan my wedding. Despite what it may look like, these two events are unrelated, but they sure do complement each other well!

Microsoft acquires Groove

Thursday, March 10th, 2005

From CNet:
Microsoft on Thursday said it will acquire Groove Networks and make Groove's founder, Ray Ozzie, chief technology officer at the software giant.

Microsoft said it will incorporate Groove's "virtual office" collaboration software into its Office line of desktop productivity applications. Ozzie, the inventor of Lotus Notes and a collaboration guru, will report to Bill Gates, Microsoft's chairman and chief software architect.

Microsoft was an investor in Groove, which has closely tied its collaboration software to Windows and other Microsoft products.

Wow. This is big. Not really that surprising, given how closely Groove worked with Microsoft to integrate Groove Virtual Office with SharePoint, but still... wow. Ray Ozzie brings incredible knowledge and credibility in the collaboration space to Microsoft, which is very important, because I think that collaboration is something that Microsoft just didn't "get". Their previous efforts and even the way they talked about collaboration were the way Lotus people were talking about it ten years ago. I expect we'll see big changes in that arena very quickly.

What do you think about the acquisition of Groove?

Thanks to Jake for the heads-up!

Shameless self-promotion

Thursday, May 6th, 2004

I'll join in the shameless self-promotion that some of my fellow speakers are putting in their blogs and let you know where I'll be next week: speaking at the View's Admin2004 conference in Boston. I'll be presenting four sessions: Mail Monitoring and Performance, Maximize Your Server Uptime with Domino Clustering, Running Domino on Linux, and Transitioning Your Skills to WebSphere. I'll also be helping out at the Candle booth in the Solutions Showcase and helping Chris Miller out with his Lotus Instant Messaging (Sametime) jumpstart on Tuesday.

If you're planning to be there, let me know! If not, there's still time to register, you know.

Again, I'd like to apologize for the lack of posts lately - I've been swamped at the office preparing for the our big blue transition, and my time away from the office has been filled with preparation for the View conference and, most recently, a trip to Philadelphia to officiate my big brother's wedding. I promise I'll be posting a lot more stuff in the coming weeks, now that I don't have to prepare for huge events like conferences and weddings.

My next project is to get my laptop to dual-boot RedHat and Win2k - I've been running VMWare on my test box so I can run RedHat with Domino, and that's working great, but VMWare is a HUGE memory hog, and my trusty laptop just isn't beefed up enough to handle it, so I'm just going to repartition the hard drive and create a nice little Linux partition to play with. The really geeky part about it is that I'm going to do some of the work on the plane ride to Boston. I've done this before, but it's been a while, so I'm hoping it will all go well. I'm doing it on a spare hard drive that's been completely backed up (mirrored, in fact) so if I mess anything up, I won't be waking up my fellow passengers with newly made up compound curses. I'll just calmly reformat and ask the flight attendant for another wee drop of single malt.

IBM Acquires Candle Corp

Thursday, April 1st, 2004

IBM issued a press release this morning announcing its agreement to acquire Candle Corporation. Details here and here. (FYI - Both news blurbs appear to be the same).

The acquisition makes a lot of sense from both sides of the picture. Candle has always been closely aligned with IBM, and has a portfolio of systems management software that works with IBM hardware and software products. IBM has a habit of acquiring companies with a history of innovation and market leadership.

Wow, that last paragraph is just chock-full of corporate jargon. That's probably because I work for Candle, and I just got out of a corporate-wide meeting discussing the acquisition. Of course, nobody involved can really discuss the details of the acquisition publicly or with employees until the standard government regulatory approvals are completed, but as a former IBMer who has always had somewhat of a bias towards IBM and its products, I have to say I'm pretty excited about the whole thing. I really do think it'll be a good fit for both companies - as one analyst put it (and I'm paraphrasing here), Candle and IBM have been dating for 27 years - it's about time they finally tied the knot.
