2007 Domino Administration Survey

Thursday, January 25th, 2007

The following survey was created by the development team to help gather information about current usage of Domino systems. Please send completed forms to 2007adminsurvey@notesdev.ibm.com.

2007 Domino Administration Survey

Your valued feedback will have a strong influence on our Domino 8.0.x and 9 development decisions/efforts.  A 2003 Admin Survey led directly to important features, such as Domino Domain Monitoring; this survey is intended to be used in the same way.  Thank you for your time and effort in responding to these questions.

Survey Description and Instructions

There are two survey versions available:  a short survey, intended for someone to complete in about 15 minutes, and a longer survey.  Administrators are encouraged to take the longer survey; it provides much more and more valuable feedback to the Domino team.

Both surveys are divided up into the following sections:
Preliminary Information
General Administration Issues
Server Monitoring, Troubleshooting and Health
Server Versions, Deployment and Configuration
Client Deployment and Desktop Management
Directory and User/Group Administration
Security Administration
Messaging Administration
Application Management
Archiving and Document Management

Surveys can be taken via soft form or hard copy.  To get and take the soft copy version, contact a Domino admin developer in the lab for details.

Please answer all of the survey questions below as completely and accurately as possible.  The information you supply below will be treated anonymously (your company's name will not be associated with the responses you provide unless you allow it) and will not be published outside of the WPLC organization.  Feel free to supply any additional constructive information not directly solicited in the survey questions.   Also feel free to respond selectively to the survey, but complete survey responses are the most useful.

2.  Do you find security features and interfaces to be usable?  Rank the usability below and comment:

_____easy to use
_____acceptable, but not easy or hard
_____hard to use
_____very hard to use, blocks deployment and creates additional work
Comments:

3.  Are there security standards missing or under-developed which you would like to see added/improved?  If so, describe below:

4.  Do you use DDM Security probes? If not, why not?

Application Management

1.  Are you currently using application management tools (meaning any tools to facilitate deployment, monitoring, tracking, maintenance, retirement of applications) other than what's available in Notes/Domino?  If so, what?

1.  Are you using any third party archiving tools?  If so, which ones and what do they provide that Domino does not?

2.  What does Notes/Domino archiving need to add to make it usable?  If these features/improvements were added, would you use archiving?

b.  If so:

1.  Do you use Domino Archiving Policies to set archiving standards for users in your domain?  If not, what is keeping you from using Archive Policies?  What improvements can be made here?

2.  Do you allow end users to manage their own mailfiles with Domino Archiving?  If not, why not?

3.  Do you use database quotas on user's mailfiles or on their archive file?  If so, how do you proceed once the quota is reached?  For example, do you create new archive databases?

4.  Do you use Domino Archiving against non-mail databases in your domain?  If not, why not?

5.  What is the typical Domino Archiving Criteria that you use?  For example: "Archive documents 'older than' X # of days".

6.  Do you prefer to use Server based archiving, or do you allow users to keep local archive files on their machines?   If not local, why not?

3.  Have you ever used IBM Commonstore?  If so, and if you have also used Domino native archiving, how would you compare the features?  What lacking features would you like to see added or improved in either feature set?
